“All things move in regular, predictable, cyclic rhythms, from the rising and setting of the sun, A Kalpa or Cosmic Day in the mind of God is made up of four Yugs or Jugs (Cosmic Cycles, Epochs or Ages, much like the Seasons of the year) known as: Piscean Age vs Aquarian Age There are those who teach that human life occurs in a Kalpa or Cycle, a dance that lasts for 4,320,000 years. A Kalpa equals Four Ages, Epochs or Yugas: Krita, Treta, Dwapara, and Kali. The Krita Yuga lasts for 1,728,000 years (4800 divine years); the Treta Yuga lasts for 1,296,000 (3600 divine years); the Dwapara Yuga lasts for 864,000 (2400 divine years); and the Kali Yuga lasts for only 432,000 (1200 divine years) in which the power of evil and destruction takes over. Note: Do not take these figures literally for their purpose is just to give an idea of vastness. At the end, You, I, the Eternal Self, takes the form of renewal through death. And then, another Krita Yuga begins. Krita or Satya Yuga (Golden Age) is the Age of Truth and Purity. It is sinless. Dharma, or The Path of Righteousness, is perfect during Krita Yuga. But during Treta Yuga (the Silver Age), Adharma or evil enters the world and the very fabric of time begins to decay. Then comes Dwapara Yuga (the Bronze Age) in which the dissolution continues. Finally, Kali Yuga, the fourth Age (the Iron Age), is almost entirely corrupt, where Maya dominates human existence and Truth and Dharma barely survive. Each Kalpa or Cycle of Four Ages equals 12,000 divine years, i.e., 365 times 12,000 human years long. Note: The objective of all spiritual paths is to see God, the One Creator, even in the midst of Maya. See YouAreTheEssence.com. See Rabinder Singh On The Four Ages. See One Is The Answer. The Four Ages of human life on Earth There are Four Ages, Jugs, Yugas, or cycles of time on Earth as given in Gurbaani. After every Four-Age cycle a new cycle begins. We do not know how many cycles Earth has gone through but according to scientists, using radio activity methods, it's taken place over billions of years. Considering the Jugs from the perspective of Gurbaani, evolution or changes are considered not in terms of time, nor in terms of a material or physical means, but in terms of the spirituality, spiritual consciousness or awareness, of humanity. It is said that human life occurs in Kalpas or Cycles, a dance that lasts for 4,320,000 years. A Kalpa equals Four Ages: Satya or Krita Jug (Golden Age), Treta Jug (Silver Age), Dwapara Jug (Bronze Age), and Kali Jug (Iron Age). The Satya/Krita Jug lasts for 1,728,000 years (4,800 divine years); the Treta Jug lasts for 1,296,000 (3600 divine years); the Dwapara Jug lasts for 864,000 (2,400 divine years); and the Kali Jug lasts for only 432,000 (1,200 divine years) in which the power of evil and destruction takes over. So, the ages are in 4: 3: 2: 1 ration re length. Again, do not take these figures literally for their purpose is just to give the sense of vastness. Source. Lord Rama exited the Earth in Treta Jug, Lord Krishna exited the Earth in Dwapara Jug. Guru Nanak exited in Kali Jug. Each of these beings were spiritually inspired people who brought changes to people's thinking. Hence the respective Age evolved. These beings turned people towards spirituality -- a path to loving God, to achieving union with God. The human body is the final stage in the 8.4 million years of its development. During the Satya Jug each person speaks Truth and lives with four quarters of virtue and no sin. The average human lifespan is 100,000 years. Each person is a Bhagat or devotee of God, a fully realized person: "Sat jug sach kahe sabh koee. Ghar ghar andar bhagat hoee." pg-199. In Tretta Jug, one leg of spirituality, which stands on four legs in Satya Jug, is missing while living with two quarters of virtue and two quarters sin. The average human lifespan is 10,000 years. Each person is a hypocrite believing that God lives a separate existence: "Trettay ik kal keeny door. Pakhand vartiaa janan door." pg-199. In Duapper Jug everybody develops doubt about God. Confused and doubtful, living with two quarters of virtue and two quarters sin. The average human lifespan is 1,000 years. Only a few even believe in the existence of God: "Duapper doojay dubidha hoee. Bharam bhlaanay jaanay koee." pg-199. In Kali Jug Dharam or Dharma has only one leg of spirituality to stand on living with one quarter virtue and three quarters sin. The average human lifespan is 100 years. In addition, Maya bedazzles us with multiple attachments to the material world: "Kaljug Dharam ik kala ghtaa-ay. Ik paer chalay Maya moh vdhaa-ay." pg-200. We are now in this period. Although most of us forget our early life memory, have no idea about our past lives, Sat Gurus recall past Jugs. This happens when one becomes realized or becomes one with God. Sat Gurus are known for their service and sacrifices for others on Earth during all the Jugs, "Pragat bhaee saglay Jug andar Gur Nanak ki vadiaee." -- Gurbaani Guru Nanak goes back to the beginning of the God's Universe and describes in detail in Raag Maaru as to how the Universe was created from nothing to its present form. Again, Guru Nanak tells us in Gurbaani how a person will achieve union with God in each Jug. This he gives as a gift to the wise persons of each Jug. He informs that celibacy, physical control and pilgrimages are the Dharam of meeting God in the first three Jugs respectively, but in Kali Jug the Dharam is to sing God's praises. Every Jug has its own way of liberation (from Maya) and one can find it through the Vedas and Puranas: "Chauhn Jugaan kaa hun nibera nar manukhaan no ik nidhaanaa, Jatt sanjam tirath ohna Jugaan ka dharam hai kal meh kirtan pardhaanaa. Jugo Jug aapo apnaa dharam hai khol dekho Ved Puraanaa." -- Gurbaani So we have obtained the human birth to achieve salvation from Maya, which is responsible for good times, bad times and rebirths. In this Age of Kali Jug, if we love God and sing kirtan, praising God, it will get us liberation and freedom from Maya with the blessings of Satguru, and the highest gift from God, His spiritual power, Naam. (See Word Physiology.) With Naam we gain spiritual freedom, we are never born again, and we merge with God after death -- a life in peace and bliss, forever. -- See YouAreTheEssence.com. MySense The Four Ages of human life on Earth A Yug is one of the traditional Four Ages into which Vedic literature divides time in the order of Satya Yug (1,728,000 years), Treta Yug (1,296,000 years), Duapar Yug (864,000 years) and Kali Yug (432,000 years). Source: Asa di Vaarsteek by Prof Sahib Singh, Singh Bros., Amritsar. In Satya Yug the driving force is dharam (desire to do one's duty and adherence to a code of conduct i.e., rehat) and the vehicle (i.e. human experience) is contentment (santokh); in Treta Yug the driving force is chivalry (Jor: strength signifying the quality of the saint warriors) and the vehicle is control over sensual desires (jatth); in Duapar Yug the driving force is high conduct (satth) and the vehicle is meditation (tapp); and in Kali Yug, the driving force is falsehood and deception (koor) and the vehicle is the fire (agan) of desire (for more and more). Thus, Gurbani, by using the idiom of the Four Yugs and their characteristics shows the relationship between positive and negative driving forces and their impact on the human being (body and mind experience), which otherwise has been mentioned as the highest life form, nay, compared with God's house: Har Mandar (Har Mandar eh sarir hai gian ratan pragat ho-ay: This body is the Lord's mansion wherein is revealed the jewel of Divine comprehension SGGS p.1346). The Gurmatt teaching is that the so called Four Yugs reside simultaneously in the human body and mind. However, there is acceptance that the characteristics of Kali Yug are predominant in the modern materialistic Age and Waheguru's kirtan (meditative singing of His Qualities) has been offered by the Guru as the medicine for the ailing human body and mind suffering from the fire of desire (Maya). -- Source. **NOTICE: The above missive is an edited version of the original commentary by Gurmukh Singh.
