The Genesis of "Roger" For Message Received

Back in the early days of mankind's flight history the letter “R” in Morse code simply meant that a message from the ground had been received. “R” in American Morse requires only three taps – two short pulses with a longer one in the middle – so it was an easy abbreviation to use. Bearing in mind pilots had already used the letter “R” in the pre-radio days of Morse code, it made perfect sense to stick with that.

However, “R” on its own could easily be misunderstood, so "Roger" became the standard to show that a message had been received loud and clear. But why "Roger"? After all, as we pointed out earlier, "Romeo" is used to denote “R” in the phonetic alphabet. In fact, it was a body called the International Telegraph Union that identified "Roger" as the best way to communicate the word “received.”

Given that not all pilots could speak English, it was believed that "Roger" was easier to remember and use than “received.” "Roger" also became very widely used in World War II. Moreover, an entire language was developed for pilots, based on the principle of being able to communicate quickly and clearly. For example, pilots use another well-known word: “Wilco.” It’s an abbreviation of “will comply.”

The fact of the matter is that "Roger" derived from “received” in Morse code, and nobody quite knows exactly how that happened.

And...

Isn't the phenomenal power of the human mind amazing?

According to a researcher at Cambridge University, it does not matter in what order the letters in a word are; the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. The rest can be a total mess and you can still read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but reads the words as a whole. Amazing, and I always thought spelling was important.

To properly document that you were aware of necessary repairs at your rental property, you should establish a written maintenance request program that requires your tenants to promptly notify you in writing of any needed repairs. You should then keep a written record of the work done and the completion date. If the tenants are at fault, because of carelessness or even incidental damage, they have violated the lease agreement and would be responsible for the cost of the repairs.
